As a girl who loves her diamonds (it’s my birthstone after all) I knew that one day my engagement ring would be my most prized possession. I may hate washing the dishes and despise cleaning the bathtub, but boy do I feel the opposite about my precious ring! I enjoy giving it a gentle scrub every other week or so. Wondering how you can keep your engagement ring sparkly and clean? Keep reading to see how I clean my ring!

What Do I Need?

Gentle dish soap: I say gentle because I use the most basic kind with no special scents or cleaning properties
Soft toothbrush: note the adjective soft
Small dish of warm water: not cold, not scalding
Soft towel or cloth

What Do I Do?

Step 1: Fill your warm water with dish soap and swirl it to mix with your finger or the opposite side of the toothbrush.

Step 2: Drop (softly) your ring into the dish. Let it soak for about 5 minutes. Sometimes I’ll keep it in for a touch longer, sometimes it’s only in there for about 2 minutes. It’s mostly about what you have time for! Note: I personally would feel weird leaving it to soak for more than 10 minutes.

Step 3: Remove ring from water and scrub lightly with the toothbrush, especially around mounts, edges or delicate stones. I also re-dip the brush into the water-soap mixture every few brushes.

Step 4: Rinse your ring off and buff softly with a soft towel.

Step 5: You’ve got a practically brand new ring!

How Often Do I Do This?

When I first got engaged, I cleaned my ring every Sunday night. I would also do a quick clean right before an event (like a baby shower or engagement party) or traveling. Pretty much whenever I wanted it to look especially sparkly. Now, I clean it about every other week, for no reason other than laziness and it tends to look pretty clean anyways.

If you use a lot of makeup products, hair products or lotions, you work with your hands often or you work out a lot (and sweat), then it’s probably best if you stick to cleaning your ring every 7-10 days or so. I don’t use a lot of makeup or hairspray, but I do a lot of sweating at the gym (including lifting weights with my hands!) and that’s when I notice it getting cloudy. It’s more about personal preference and what you feel comfortable putting on your ring.
