Summer involves a lot of prep work: self tanning, exercising, bathing suit shopping… all of which is supposed to make you feel more comfortable when it’s time to shed the clothes and sit by the pool. I do it all: the tans, the gyms, trying to eat better. But I will say the number one way to prep for summer that makes me feel confident in my swimsuit is waxing. Hands down.

I was so excited when Waxing The City reached out to me, because pool season just started and I was due. I tend to get extremely irritated along my bikini line when I shave, which makes the bikini line even more embarrassing when I have to wear my swimsuit. I get so many dark spots and ingrown hairs that it is one of the the things I’m most self conscious of in the summer. If you’re worried about the cost, DON’T! Your first service is 50% off when you book online!

My experience with my cerologist Silvia at Waxing The City was amazing. Not only did she make me feel so comfortable and at-ease, but she gave me all of the best wax tips for before, during and after your service. Before I started waxing, I had no idea what to expect. I was terrified, uncomfortable and ridden with anxiety going into my first appointment because I really couldn’t find that much information about the best way to go about prepping and I had no idea what to expect during. Luckily, I’ve had a few appointments since that first time and I’m here to bring you all the inside scoop.

Schedule your appointment around your period. The week prior to and the week after, your skin will be a bit more sensitive than usual. Try to schedule it for the weeks in between.

Don’t shave a couple weeks before your appointment. Your hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch long, which is about the length of a grain of rice. Anything longer will take a long time to remove, anything shorter will be painful and not as clean. Make sure you plan your vacations around not shaving too!

Exfoliate often and at least 24-48 hours before. (This is one of the biggest problems that causes ingrown hairs.) Exfoliating will get rid of all of the dead skin cells and remove the chance you’ll develop ingrown hairs.

Take a pain reliever an hour before. I take whatever I have on hand (usually generic acetaminophen) but I’ve heard an NSAID like Aleve works best.

Relax. I know, it’s hard. It really hurts, I’m not going to skirt around it. It’s also uncomfortable to have someone down there, let’s be honest. But if you relax your muscles, it’ll hurt less and it’ll be over quicker. Just put it out of your mind!

Listen to your cerologist. She’ll be able to give you personalized skincare tips and recommendations for your specific hair type and pattern.

You’ll probably sweat. I sweat a lot in normal life, but my anxiety sweat is the worst. I was pretty damp after my appointment, so if you’re going to go somewhere after your appointment, make sure you wear a top that doesn’t show sweat! I made that mistake this time and wore a dark green dress and you could see it all. Oops!

Don’t work out! This one was also very hard for me, but Silvia told me multiple times during my appointment that I couldn’t go workout afterwards, and I was definitely planning on doing so. It was a great excuse not to go.

Wear loose fitting clothing. Don’t wear tight spandex shorts or pants because you wont be able to breathe! I wore a dress and cotton underwear to my appointment. It may also be a good idea to wear loose fitting shorts and go without undies when you go to sleep.

Continue to exfoliate so that your skin stays clean and clear for your next appointment. Exfoliating just 3 times a week is all you need to prepare your skin.

Wait 4-6 weeks for your next appointment. If you continue to go consistently, it’ll get less painful (I promise) and will be easier and quicker each time!

While I was at Waxing The City, I made sure to explore their other services and products. My hair grows so fast in the summertime, so brow waxing is a must, especially since I can’t shape my own to save my life. I was surprised to see that Waxing The City even has their own line of brow products (pictured above) which makes me believe they really know what they’re doing.

I’m also super interested in learning more about underarm waxing since that is also a very embarrassing place for my very dark, thick hair! I work out every day, so having smooth and hairless pits is kind of necessary. Silvia told me the same rules for the bikini line apply to the underarms, so I’ll most likely start this routine late winter/next spring when I feel comfortable growing out that spot.
