I’m a big worrier. I’m also nosey. So having a smart home security camera is kind of a no-brainer for us, especially now that we own our home and have two little dogs running around. We always wondered what it was like to be able to see what our first dog Chewy did all day while we were at work, so when we got Rooney this year, we decided to try out some new cameras to keep an eye on the dogs — oh, and the house. We tried a couple of different cameras earlier this year, but they were very bare bones. We could only watch live, manually and the camera quality wasn’t high definition. So when I was offered the opportunity to try out the Ooma Butterfleye, of course we had to try it out!

How It’s Different Than Others We Tried

The other home security cameras we tried simply provided a live feed of what was going on in the house. They both were also  fairly gaudy and required to be plugged in at all times. The Ooma Butterfleye looks really sleek, modern and fits right in with your decor so it’s not incredibly obvious that there’s a camera in the room. It’s battery-operated/rechargeable so it’s very easy to move between rooms if you want to do that.

By far the best part of the camera is how smart it is. The app will send you notifications when it recognizes things like movement, unrecognized faces, loud noises or when the camera is moved. So every time Chewy walks through the room, I can get a notification on my phone along with a video clip. If an intruder enters the home, we’ll be notified and have a video to send to the police to catch the guy. (Hoping this never happens.)

With a premium membership, the Ooma Butterfleye also records all of the moments that trigger the device and saves them in the cloud so that you can go back and watch them later. Another great feature is the auto-privacy setting. Because we don’t need to save every movement we make when we’re at home, you have the option to “geofence” your home so if your phone is in the vicinity, it won’t record.

Our Favorite Features

Have you ever wanted to talk to your dog while you’re away? I know I can’t be the only one… The Ooma Butterfleye let’s you do two-way talking! Unfortunately, when I try to talk to the dogs through it they just think I’m home so they cry and run to the door, but it would be a good way to scare your family members. 🙂

I love that the device is smart enough to recognize faces and notify you when random people are in your home. If there were ever an intruder, it would be helpful to know that someone was in our house who isn’t saved to the device.

Because the Ooma Butterfleye is battery-operated, you can put it wherever you want it. Sometimes I like to have it on our  main floor, while sometimes we have it downstairs at the entry level. Depending on where the dogs are, we can move it with ease between rooms. This is also perfect if you have a nanny, children or housecleaners that you want to keep an eye on. It’s also handy in case of any power outages.
