Andy and I love to work out. We both go to the same gym, but it’s rare to catch us in there at the same time. Since we’ve got differing schedules, he never misses an evening class, but I’m more of a lunchtime girl. We don’t often get to work out together, but that makes it more special when opportunities align!

Since Valentine’s Day for us is more about spending time together than it is about gifts or chocolates, we’re hoping to get to meet at the gym before dinner to get a little Valentine’s exercise in! Of course I had to gift Andy and I some matching adidas gear for Valentine’s Day and obviously I had to scoop up this pink cropped sweatshirt for the holiday. He’s a shoe person so these casual athletic shoes were a great pick for him!

I used to hate working out with him. We started working out together at a regular “big box” gym a few years ago. Back then, I really only liked to run on the treadmill (oh, how times have changed) and he liked to do more of the weight machines. I hate weight machines. So we’d usually go to the gym together but split up and then meet back together whenever we (he) was ready (because I hated going). I quickly realized a big, open gym was not structured enough for me so I took up different group fitness classes, like cycling, yoga and Orange Theory.

Now we both belong to an amazing Crossfit box, Crossfit Passion, which combines what we both like about the gym: group atmosphere, led by a trainer (me) and no-nonsense workouts combining weights and cardio (him). It’s so fun to be able to talk about the next day’s written workout and predict how we’ll do, then go into the gym and compete to do better. Actually, one of my favorite parts of the day is getting to talk about the day’s workout and which part we thought was hardest, how much we lifted, what we accomplished, etc. Who knew someone who never played sports seriously would be so into this!

On days we can’t make it to the gym, we’ll do a quick workout together in our garage gym. Usually Andy will come up with the workout and I will complain about it because it involves running, but once it’s over and we’re dead tired at the end together, it’s not so bad.

For Valentine’s Day, I highly suggest kicking off your date night with something active!

  • Go to a restaurant in a walkable downtown area and get there early. Window shop and talk and walk before dinner as a warm up!
  • Take your dog for a walk at a park or trail.
  • Go hiking on a trail with a view – super romantic.
  • Set up a field day and compete to see who can be the best at a number of different activities. I personally like to challenge Andy to see who can do the most squats, pushups, run a faster 400m.
  • Play a game of tennis – or ping pong. As you might have seen the equipment in our garage gym photos, we like a little table tennis.
